Module 2: Describing Motion of an Object
Distance
is how far one thing from one thing. It
can be calculated by multiplying speed by time
Formula:
Distance = speed
x time
For example:
A
bus travelling at an average rate of 50 kilometers per hour made the trip to
town in 6 hours. How far does a bus travel?
Distance = 50 kph x 6
hrs = 300 km
Time
can be calculated, by dividing the distance travelled by an object to its speed. Seconds (s), minutes (min)and hours (hr) are examples the standard units of
measurement for time .
time===
Formula:
distance
speed
For example:
If Antonio drives his car 45 km per hour and
travels a total of 225km. Calculate the travelled
time spent by Antonio ?
time
=
Speed
can be calculated by dividing the distance covered by an object in motion by
the time spent to cover the distance. Meter per second,(m/s) kilometer per
hours(kph)
are examples of units used in to express
the speed of an object
speed
=
Formula :
For example:
John drove to her sister’s house that is 20
meters away from the market in 10
minutes. What is the speed of the John’s
car?
Speed
= x = = 0.33m/s
speed = 20
m x 1
min x 20
m = 0.33 m/s
10 min 60 s 60 s
Motion
is any change in position relative to a fixed reference point. An object’s
motion is measured in terms of distance and time. Distance is a measure of how far two points
are from each other. Time is
the duration of an event taking place, or how long the interval is between
events.
A reference point is a stationary object or place that is used to determine whether or not an object is moving or has moved.
The distance covered by a moving object is affected by its speed, or the measure of how fast it moves.
The standard unit of
measurement for distance is meter. You
just add the prefix kilo when you are referring to distance that is quite far.
Prefixes like deci, centi, and milli are used if the length is quite short.
A ruler is a tool used for measuring the length
of small objects. It has centimeter and millimeter units. You can use a meter stick as
an appropriate tool to measure objects that are slightly larger than a piece of
paper like the length or width of a table, bed or short distances.
